Another typical DK visual dictionary but not nearly big enough to cover everything Star Trek. There should be one book per series. My biggest gripe is all the out-of-focus pictures. In this day and age of digital everything could the publishers not find enough decent photos to reproduce? Did they not even bother to ask the studio for high quality prints? I am sure if they asked a Trekkie somewhere they could have got some better shots than the crappy ones they used throughout the book. Mostly it is the characters that are fuzzy which is a shame as all the weapons and other stuff have great quality images.

STAR TREK is a fascinating sci fi universe with almost 50 years in the making. It's very dificult lo resume too much adventures and caracters from movies and tv series, and there are a lot of books about star trek. This book- like the DK line- is simple and basic in information about the universe (a time line, a map of the galaxy, a review of captains and crews from each series, and the most important aliens races), and a lot of pictures. Nothing more. Like a star trek fan, there's nothing new for me. This book was made for beginners actually. Altough, this item is still beautiful. Greetings from Peru.

Got this for my nephew whose a huge Trekkie and had to order at the total last minute because I had an another seller take my money for another star trek item but never actually sent it out! This had never happened to me before so I found myself trying to find a gift for my nephew on the last day for free shipping and this is what I selected... turned out this was a MUCH better choice than the other gift I had got him anyway, the pictures are great and it is just super fun to look at, the whole family passed it around.

My 5-year old is so full of questions about Star Trek I couldn't pass this up. It's great for nightly reading with him and really helps round out all the details of the Star Trek universe. Pictures are great. Covers a lot of what you'd expect and quite a bit of what you don't. Delves in to the histories of the major characters and brings back a lot of awesome episode memories. Only wish it were thicker.

As Foerstel points out in his introduction, the history of free expression in this country is a notable one, beginning with the First Amendment. But that history also encompasses a long struggle pitting free speech and open access to information against censorship and secrecy.

The alphabetically arranged entries include biographical material on individuals noted for their activities concerning intellectual freedom; information on organizations from the ACLU to the Liberty Federation; and essays on issues such as indecency, and the term "politically correct." Entries range in length from a paragraph to three or four pages. Longer entries contain substantial information, especially for significant topics such as the Freedom of Information Act or the House Un-American Activities Committee; broad issues such as hate speech and whistleblowing; and major figures such as Hugo Black. Most entries end with suggestions for further reading. These are primarily current monographs, but there are also some journal articles, videocassettes, and dissertations. There is also a selected bibliography appended, as well as a table of significant court cases and an index. Unlike those contained in The Intellectual Freedom Reference Handbook (ABC-Clio, 1992), the court cases are not summarized. It would have been a useful feature to include here.

The ABC-Clio work has a similar focus but is organized like other volumes in the Contemporary World Issues series, with an introductory essay, chronology, biographical sketches, information on organizations (some of which was a source for Foerstel), and an extensive annotated bibliography. Mass Media and the Constitution: An Encyclopedia of Supreme Court Decisions (Garland, 1989) is a good place to find more discussion of important cases in communications. This novel is tragically beautiful. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. I felt for Daisy and Piper. I worried for Edmond and Isaac. I cried for Ding and Jet. I fell in love with them all and I went through a roller coaster of emotions. I laughed. Gasped. Clutched my chest in horror. Cried. Smiled. And felt at peace. This novel takes you there through fifteen year old Daisy's eyes. You see the war in England as she sees it. You feel what she feels. And you worry for her. I inhaled this novel and I haven't done that in a long time. Meg knew what she was doing when she wrote this strange little detailed book. I know I'll read this again. Give it a try. You won't be able to put it down.

This reads as more of a stream of conscious. There is no punctuation, just a long rambling of thoughts. Very different, but enjoyable.There is deep meaning in this story and the reader must look further than the surface words.This is a beautiful story, but I think this is too mature for most teens under age 18.This is not like the movie, so don't expect to find anything remotely found in the movie other than the relationship between the two main characters. The book and movie are like night and day.

I quite enjoyed this; it is great writing and an interesting story. It's not really as bleak as you might expect for this sort of topic or storyline, and the protagonist's voice keeps it fun and snarky even during the rough times.My only complaint is that the end -- last chapter -- was too short and sudden. In my mind the length of that part should have been doubled. It went too suddenly from being a loquacious teen's inner ramblings to a complete near-shutout. That leaves the reader feeling hanging and unsatisfied, with incomplete closure. Still, the book is well worth reading and a genuinely creative and interesting work.

Once I got used to the voice, however, the style didnâ€™t bother me anymore and I was able to truly enjoy the story.This was a fascinating war/apocalyptic story because it didnâ€™t focus on the war. It was a refreshing take to have the POV be from someone not in the mist of the chaotic action and to see what a person's reaction to everything might be from afar.The story wasnâ€™t a fast-paced narrative where the characters were constantly in the thick of the action. How I Live Now is by far one of the strangest books I have ever read. It is also one of the best. With that being said, I could see why a vast majority of people would not like it.I found out about this book through the movie. I heard that Saoirse Ronan was going to be starring in it and I was immediately interested. This book deals with some hard topics that not many people like to talk about but that need to be discussed. Meg Rosoff manages to balance these complicated ideas without making them the center of attention. The plot of this book is surviving a World War and the characters trying to find their way back to each other. It just happens to include, anorexia, extreme PTSD, and incest between cousins.The writing style in this book is extremely different and a little hard to get into. There are no quotations marks, many run on sentences, and very little punctuation. Without spoiling it, the reasoning for this style of writing is explained near the end of the book and it makes the story that much better and even more heartbreaking. Even though the writing was strange, that didn't stop Meg from being able to write some beautiful passages and quotes through out the book.Most books about wars are action packed and fast paced because they usually take place in the worst part of the war. How I Live Now took place at the very beginning of it. It was a very slow build, which I loved, and the main characters were left unaffected for quite a while. It reminded me of if you were to read a book about the very start of a zombie apocalypse. It would take a very long time for the virus to start affecting everyone in the world.The characters in this book were all very distinct, different, and realistic. It was interesting to see how the four siblings, ranging from ages nine to sixteen, shared many of the same ideas and also disagreed on many. They each dealt with the war in four very different ways. Then, there was Daisy. She started as a negative, spoiled kid from New York and she had to learn how to fit in with a bunch of positive, nature loving siblings who lived in the country side of England.I have yet to watch the movie, but I would love to do so soon. I know that it is very different from the book when it comes to characters and character deaths, but I've heard many positive things about it.This book was absolutely incredible and probably one of my favorites of the year. It is definitely a book that I have thought about constantly since I finished it and I wish that more people, teens especially, would read it.
